If you don’t already know this, I started out this blog back in 2007 to teach myself about a few different things, among which was games, making money online, and some webmaster stuff. These occasional webmaster type of posts I haven’t included in a while so bear with me, as Iyou probably won’t see one like it for a while again, or possibly more if my insomnia doesn’t go away.

Anyways I somehow got the idea in my head to go a head and install, on my Windows 64 bit Vista box, a copy of Ruby on Rails 2.3.2. Simple enough, it was as easy as following the directions, and installing it. I won’t rewrite a tutorial on that seeing as how they are on the web in abundance. Here’s one I followed up to the SQL part. (I installed MySQL version 6.0 instead).

Speaking of MySQL, this was the cause of my problems tonight, however I was able to finally find the answers to my questions after much Googling. Why does it seem like if there is anything that could go wrong on an installation, it does.

So anyways the first problem that came up after the I went through the whole thing was to run the:

ruby script\server

Command to test out the darned application. To my horror I got a big red error message stating that something went wrong. Great, but I quickly found one error. Ruby defaults to SQLlive so in order for it to work with MySQL I had to change the contents of the database.yml file in the test project to contain the following:

development:
adapter: mysql
encoding: utf8
database: myfirstproject_development
username:
password:

However this didn’t seem to solve the issue. I still had that big old red error message pop up telling my that I failed to install it correctly. The error I was getting was:

bundled mysql.rb driver has been removed from Rails 2.2

Now this part took me a little bit of sifting through information. There was plenty of different solutions which all kind of worked. The most simplest was to copy the file libmySQL.dll from my SQL\bin folder to the c:\ruby\bin folder thanks to this post.

Soo, after all that I go and start up the ruby server again, and run into yet another error. This really isn’t my day for doing new installs. This time during the ‘rake’ command test, I get the:

Client does not support authentication protocol

error this time. Great, but atleast Sun has an easy way to fix that one here. Apparently you get that error message because you’re using a MySQL version older than 4.1 or something about old password hashes etc.

But anyways, its done. After all those errors, and about 3 hours of time spent, since I’m not at my peak thinking skills at 3am in the morning, I finally get the darned installation done. Its good, I can start my Ruby on Rails learning experience when I get back home from work tomorrow.

Except for one thing…

I installed MySQL 6.0 which is in alpha, and people are telling my to go install MySQL 5.1 if I want to learn on a stable platform. Soo, tomorrow I’ll be uninstalling, and reinstalling all this crap all over again.

Now this is surprising to me, because when I was growing up I hardly knew people interested in video games as much as me.  Especially the girls of my class, they seemed more interested in guys, surfing,
tricked out cars, or the latest brand purses etc.  Yet here they were, a gaggle of girl gamers talking about the latest features, games, and how awesome bashing a zombie’s head in with a shotgun feels. The guy was just sitting there, and judging from the way the girls were going on about the games it would seem he’s the one left out.  How I wish now that I had been born into their generation where playing video games is the ‘in’ thing, instead of feeling like the old 30 year old guy stalking the high school kids.

I sat there in awe of what was transpiring.  Here was an event taking place that would have been monumental back when I was growing up.  Yet these people had no clue as to the significance of what was being said.  It was like it was common knowledge that girls liked to talk about how funny a corpse blows up in Fallout 3 when you have a certain skill.

I thought girls shuddered at the site of a bloody, gory, rotten demon getting chainsawed in half by an overly large guy in a power- suit.   Yet here were a bunch of girls giggling about how to get the most blood to splatter from doing so.

Now that I’ve mentioned it, I think one or two of those girls work at one of the local GameStop store too.  When did this change all happen? I used to work at a Software Etc before it was a GameStop, and recall one or two girls there.  However I also recall them being quite a bit younger as well.  The older crew was the standard nerdy looking old gamer/comic book types that stalk the mall with our vast knowledge of comic book heroes, D&D, and Magic the Gathering rules.

I’m not saying the change to the new generation is a bad thing.  No, it’s an excellent change, but I feel a pang of sadness as the guys of this new generation will be able to enjoy the company of one the opposite gender as easily.  So where’s all the 30ish female gamers on Maui, and why aren’t they stomping Destruction on the Azazel server with me in Warhammer Online.

Yes, none other than Ozzy Osbourne himself in a World of Warcraft commercial.  Yes the one and only mischief make who had shot 17 of his family’s cats, and bit the head off a bat during a concert.  He even argues with the director like Mr T. does in his commercial, which I thought nice match up.

And what other class for him is there besides an undead warlock with multiple succubi around him.  Maybe a Deathknight, but I like the whole surrounded by seductive females thing they got going on in the commercial.

I know I’m not the only one who doesn’t like politics in games.  Though other people disagree with me and love the idea of politics in games.  However it seems like the general consensus of that bill board in game is wondering wether or not you can get your car to land right smack on Obama’s constipated face.  Granted I think the game will sell out for people wanting to do just that, but does Obama’s campaign really want that?  By the way, if you want to find the place where Obama’s billboard resides so that you can see if you can crash into it, here’s some instructions on how to find it in Burnout: Paradise Xbox Live

Electronic Arts is also putting up Obama ads in other games such as Madden 09, and NBA Live 09.  What’s next?  I’ve been playing Warhammer Online alot, and that one is also part of EA.  Does this mean we’ll see Obama’s face in Warhammer?  Maybe a Obama Vs McCain scene like this:

Yes, you saw it correctly.  This guy has 36 World of Warcraft accounts, and pays $5711 a year in subscriptions.  If that isn’t crazy enough as it is.  This guy can play the accounts simultaneously using this setup:

Can you guys imagine playing against this guy in Alterac Valley with a main assist macro, and getting your face melted by 36 simultaneous frost shocks?  According to the post, he wants to raid some 10, and 20 man instances for gear as well as some battle grounds.

He even remembered to chain refer a friend himself so that he can powerlevel some other classes like druids/mages and priests so that he has different classes for raids/instances.  When Wrath of the Lich King comes out next month, he plans on picking up the game for all 36 accounts.  Which will cost him about $1500 plus tax.

If that isn’t a crazy addiction, I don’t know what else to tell you.  I prefer to be addicted cute World of Warcraft Cosplay like the ones from the recent Blizzcon 08.  Especially this elf girl:

Under the program 100,000 people between 50-75 are going to be given a computer game to play.  The amount of hours they play, as well as the rate of car accidents that occurred to this test group will get recorded.  These people will get compared to people who don’t play video games.  All this just to test if seniors playing video games get some brain exercise that helps them avoid senior moment car crashes.

The company doing the computer game used in the test group, Posit Science, has 9 years of research on how to improve senior’s brain fitness. If all goes well with the test, then Allstate will extend this to the rest of states.  Meaning people over 50 that play video games will get a discount.

So, now when is Allstate going to extend this to the younger generation?  I mean I play a lot of video games so if this flies I should get one heck of a big discount.  Atleast I’ll have something to look forward to when I’m 50.  These guys should send Jack a computer version of GTA, since he’ll need the discount especially since he got disbarred.

We are looking for two part-time employees to help run our Welland Warhammer Club and store.

Responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

-participating in the club
-teaching beginners how to play
-taking orders for items not in stock
-taking purchases for items in stock
-helping run larger events (such as tournaments)
-run regular smaller events in the club (e.g. campaigns, 40k bike racing, kill team)
-actively participating in the hobby, including collecting and painting your own models

Compensation includes $10 per hour as well as an employee discount on all products that we sell.

To start off you will most likely be working 5-10 hours per week, but as demand increases and we open more nights, your number of hours will increase.

Right now you will be expected to work Saturdays and some evenings.

Uncanny resemblence to one of gaming’s favorite protagonists?  Yes, very much so.  Is the world going to end, and blow up when the Large Hadron Collider actually smashes particles together?  Unlikely, but atleast I’ll be able to get some sleep tonight knowing that Gordon Freeman will be there in spirit.
