Where Did These Girl Gamers Show Up From?

My how the generations have changed compared to when I was growing up. Girl gamers seem to have appeared everywhere, and I just didn’t want to believe it until I overheard a conversation at lunch today. It was a conversation between 3 or 4 girls, and a guy which I guess was the boyfriend of one of them. They were talking about some of the recent games that came out like Left 4 Dead, Gears of War 2
and I could have sworn I heard something about Tier 3 Warhammer or something.
Now this is surprising to me, because when I was growing up I hardly knew people interested in video games as much as me. Especially the girls of my class, they seemed more interested in guys, surfing,
tricked out cars, or the latest brand purses etc. Yet here they were, a gaggle of girl gamers talking about the latest features, games, and how awesome bashing a zombie’s head in with a shotgun feels. The guy was just sitting there, and judging from the way the girls were going on about the games it would seem he’s the one left out. How I wish now that I had been born into their generation where playing video games is the ‘in’ thing, instead of feeling like the old 30 year old guy stalking the high school kids.

I sat there in awe of what was transpiring. Here was an event taking place that would have been monumental back when I was growing up. Yet these people had no clue as to the significance of what was being said. It was like it was common knowledge that girls liked to talk about how funny a corpse blows up in Fallout 3 when you have a certain skill.
I thought girls shuddered at the site of a bloody, gory, rotten demon getting chainsawed in half by an overly large guy in a power- suit. Yet here were a bunch of girls giggling about how to get the most blood to splatter from doing so.
Now that I’ve mentioned it, I think one or two of those girls work at one of the local GameStop store too. When did this change all happen? I used to work at a Software Etc before it was a GameStop, and recall one or two girls there. However I also recall them being quite a bit younger as well. The older crew was the standard nerdy looking old gamer/comic book types that stalk the mall with our vast knowledge of comic book heroes, D&D, and Magic the Gathering rules.

I’m not saying the change to the new generation is a bad thing. No, it’s an excellent change, but I feel a pang of sadness as the guys of this new generation will be able to enjoy the company of one the opposite gender as easily. So where’s all the 30ish female gamers on Maui, and why aren’t they stomping Destruction on the Azazel server with me in Warhammer Online.

Equity between women and men has came to Gaming world as well

I’m surprised you are just noticing this trend now. It has been in full swing for years! My 17 year old son plays Guitar Hero with a mixed crowd, and one of his better friends is a girl who has played every game that came along.

It seems that girls are breaking out of all sorts of molds. They are really starting to climb the ranks in more sports too. They’ve quadrupled in our local road & mountain bike races over this year alone. I think it’s great.

This is a common thing. And it looks kind of sad, regarding that when I was a young one, we were playing outside with our bikes and stuff. Come oon! The computer is mind controling us!!
Yes in gaming tournaments I have seen girls included in team as well and playing really better than boys too.
@ George – haha soo true. I guess it was about time.
@ Tim – Its still a surprise to me, my circle of friends is mostly male that we game with. It’d be nice to have some variety for our LANs.
@ Aaron – I see a tone of female atheletes. Especially joggers out here in Maui, and surfers are alot more common.
@ Simmon – Mind controlling computers eh? Lol but its soo easy that way =) Maybe it’ll be like Matrix in the future. Everyone hooked up to the computer.
@ uk – I notice this alot when I watch G4tv. The teams have girls play, and many of them do fairly well. Maybe they have good reaction times or coordination or something innate =P
I’m a girl gamer too! I’ve been a gamer for 18 years–that was back in the Sega Genesis days! I used to play with Barbie dolls but ended up collecting games instead.

I didn’t play video games growing up, but my now-husband and I have been playing video games together since we started dating eight years ago. For us, it’s a social activity – a common interest we can do together. Granted, there are certain games he loves that I don’t enjoy, but I’ve been known to at least sit and watch him as he plays Resident Evil (it’s almost like watching a movie!). We own a Wii and games like Wii Sports really make video game playing a fun, social activity for us.

I am not surprised at all that women are standing out in the crowd. They were always supposed to do that, don’t you think? When there was slavery, no one thought of blacks becoming independent but now they are. Same way, many people thought about the women, but now they have started to become independent!
Looks like some good role playing games.
