View Websites In-Game – World of Warcraft or Warhammer Online

Someone from my guild brought this useful Techcrunch post up which I figured I’d share with you guys.  I remember playing World of Warcraft, and always alt-tabbing to go check Thottbot, or Wowhead for quests, items, or even gear look ups.  Lately I’ve been doing the same for Warhammer, and its Wowhead clone WarDB for when I’m on the lookout for tome tactics.  This program, called Rogue, solves the problem of alt tabbing  though.

So what does Rogue do exactly.  Imagine you’re in game looking for a specific item, and you can’t seem to get the exact location down.  You pop open a browser in game, and go look up the item in question from an online database.  While you’re at it you go and check your e-mail etc.  You notice that your character is under attack by some NPC since your in-game browser is transparent, and you take care of the annoyance safely, and you’re good to go.

I run dual monitors, and play in windowed mode so I don’t need applications like these, but with this I could probly go back to full screen mode, and play the game.   A YouTube demonstration video is here if you’re interested in it:

Pretty nifty don’t you think?  Anyways the Rogue FAQ is here if you want to read up on it.  And here are some of their current implemented features.

Some of Rogue’s current features include:

• Game overlay for Windows XP & Vista
• Full CSS, JavaScript, and Flash support
• Editable homepage and bookmarks
• GotGame Search powered by Google
• Hot key to open/hide browser when in game
• Configurable transparency settings
• Optimization toggle for faster/slower computers

Over the next few months, we will be rolling out a slew of additional features for Rogue that will further enhance the player’s gaming experience.

Also to run the specs you don’t have to have a top of the line computer.  A system that plays the current games will be more than enough to do so.  Here’s the system specs if you want to check it out.

• OS: Windows XP or Vista
• CPU: 1.5 Ghz or higher
• RAM: 512 MB
• HD Space: 10 MB of available hard drive space
• Video: 256MB graphics card (e.g., NVIDIA GeForce 6600 Series or ATI Radeon X1950 Series or better)
• Internet Connection: Broadband (e.g., 798 Kbps or faster download speed)

As well as a current list of games it works on.  Unfortunately Call of Duty 4 users won’t be able to use it.

The following games have been tested by our staff and work with Rogue’s overlay technology:

• Age of Conan
• Battlefield 2
• Call of Duty
• Call of Duty 2 (not on menu screens)
• Civilization IV
• Counter-Strike: Source
• Counter-Strike 1.6
• Gears of War
• Guild Wars
• Half-Life 2
• Halo: Combat Evolved
• Neverwinter Nights
• Neverwinter Nights 2
• Portal
• Unreal Tournament III
• Warhammer 40,000
• Warhammer: Dawn of War
• World of Warcraft

Currently, Rogue’s overlay technology does not support the following games:

• Call of Duty 4
• Diablo 2
• Doom 3
• Quake 4
• Starcraft
• Warcraft III
• Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

We hope to update Rogue to support all of these titles over the next few months.

Last of all here’s the Rogue program download link if you’re interested.  Looks like its a free application so far.  I didn’t have to fill in the e-mail to download it either.

As for me, both World of Warcraft and Warhammer online are great games. However Warhammer online lacks some features and the atmosphere there is not as good as in WoW. That is why I prefer playing WoW.
