Free to Play MMORPG – Ragnarok Online

Free MMORPG Ragnarok OnlineThanks to Sanjo-Chan over at Centakume.info for this info about an old Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) called Ragnarok Online that I used to play with my ex-girlfriend a few years back.  This one brings back memories, and now Gravity has started up a subscription free server for international players.

Its almost tempting to go back there to see if my old guild is still around or not.  This new free server called Valkryie will have some limitations, compared to paid subscription servers, regarding the game which are listed in an easy to read table here on their subscriptions page.

Some of the differences won’t be noticed too much like empty bottles now only being sold from NPCS etc.  (I really hated all the bottles from those damned porings that I picked up all the time anyways).  However other items might limit the game quite a bit such as certain monster cards not being dropped at all.  For example the Gold Thief Bug card.  I was a Knight class wearing one of those, and it made me pretty invincible since I couldn’t be the target of spells.  It was great for PvP as I could not be CC’d at all, or nuked from mages.  It especially helped against bosses that had alot of special attacks as those couldn’t hurt me either.   Granted you couldn’t be healed by party members too, it was still a pretty powerful card.  MMORPG Ragnarok Online Character

Another difference is the safe armor upgrades being reduced to +0 on the free server.  This would definitely reduce end game play as even with the basic safe armor upgrades being +4 most people only had +7-8 bonuses on their armor unless they were rich.  This is a pretty large damage mitigation benefit loss for free players.  I hope that I’m wrong about the mechanics of the game now or they rethink this one.

Man I miss that game sometimes.  The people who played it were some of the friendliest bunch I’ve ever encountered.  So if you are in the market for a free to play MMORPG, Ragnarok Online is definitely recommended.  Download the game here, and register here for free.  Remember the free server is called Valkyrie.

Minimum system requirements are pretty low:

OS Windows 98se/me/2000/XP
CPU Pentium – 500 or equivalent
(AMD CPU, Celeron)
RAM 128MB
VGA DirectX 3D Support
VGA Card with 8 MB Video memory
SOUND DirectSound support
Other DirectX 8.

I have played on the new server for a bit. The leveling process at the beginning (in the newbie zone) is easier than a few years ago. All I needed to do was talk to the NPCs and get EXP as a reward. But the after getting out of the newbie zone at base level 8, the grind got annoying pretty fast–and that’s before I could change jobs.

I would play it when I don’t feel like playing the bigger games, like when the servers are down, but at least there’s a way to play Ragnarok without searching for those “FREE” servers, lol.

@ Myron Tay – Definitely, I have to put iRO up as one of the better MMORPGs that I’ve played ever.

@ Sanjo-chan – I have to agree, I played on quite a bit of free-servers in my day especially since many weren’t open to the US right away. Now I’ll no longer need to proxy through to a JP ip address to log into jRO

I have also played Ragnarok battle offline and was happy with it. Based on your review I think I will try the online version as well. It really is a cool game.
