Virtual Obama – Stay Out of Our Games

While it definitely isn’t the first time that a politician shows up in a video game. I for one am hoping that it will be one of the last times. Check out what this pic of Obama on a billboard from the game Burnout: Paradise for the Xbox 360. Aside from the fact the he looks a little constipated, it makes you think, “Do I really care? I’m trying to play a game right now, and don’t want to think about politics”.
I know I’m not the only one who doesn’t like politics in games. Though other people disagree with me and love the idea of politics in games. However it seems like the general consensus of that bill board in game is wondering wether or not you can get your car to land right smack on Obama’s constipated face. Granted I think the game will sell out for people wanting to do just that, but does Obama’s campaign really want that? By the way, if you want to find the place where Obama’s billboard resides so that you can see if you can crash into it, here’s some instructions on how to find it in Burnout: Paradise Xbox Live
Electronic Arts is also putting up Obama ads in other games such as Madden 09, and NBA Live 09. What’s next? I’ve been playing Warhammer Online alot, and that one is also part of EA. Does this mean we’ll see Obama’s face in Warhammer? Maybe a Obama Vs McCain scene like this:

I just couldn’t help myself. Here’s a gif file I made on what the Obama/McCain debate should talk about since they seem to want to get into games:

So, the most popular sports game of all time has potentially set up glorious leader propaganda if Obama wins. Just great. Mao would be proud.
And the “early voting has begun” billboard will look great next to all the voter fraud lawsuits that are going on right now.
Subliminal messaging. They don’t care if you look, they figure your brain is registering it regardless.
Well, I think its kinda cool if the main point is entertainment. But if the characters are not put there for fun, but for serious purposes – I want them out. After all, I play games to have fun and forget about “the real world”.

It’s brilliant actually, if done properly. I play several ATV games that already show manufacturer signs and logos but I never really paid attention to this stuff until people started mentioning it.
I was playing a game last night and drove by a HUGE sign over a restaurant with a blatant ad on it, my thought at the time was “well at least they could have put it where I can run it over”.
I hope game developers tread lightly with ads but if they can sneak them in and it doesn’t irritate me then i’m all for it. It IS money in their pocket which helps them make better games right?
